Three Important Steps In Catering

We all have moments when we need to hold a dinner party or event for our friends, colleagues and families. Whether this be a birthday, a corporate event, a Christmas “works do”, or simply a meal we all enjoy and appreciate the luxury of having a cooked meal laid out and presented with style and decorum.

Whether planning your own event, or drafting in professional caterers in West Sussex to take care of the catering for you, there are three steps that are vital to ensure your event is a good one. Etiquette, table manners, planning, call it what you will but these tips are a handy guide to ensure your catering event is a smooth and pleasant time for all. Of course we can’t all learn the art of catering just by reading a catering article, but there are three areas that are worth paying particular attention to.

Table service
Table service is the way your cutlery, napkins and glasses are laid out on your table. A silver service is less common these days, with most catering events just providing the cutlery for diners to choose themselves. But a professional silver service is always a lovely touch. A great tip for knowing which cutlery to select for which dish is to work from the outside in. The outside knife and fork for example would usually be a soup spoon and a knife for buttering your bread rolls. Next we would have the starter course which would be a small knife and fork for our starter. Then the main course which could be for example a joint fork and main knife. Finally a desert spoon, knife or fork will be set for our dessert.

Seating arrangements
Seating arrangement should never be ignored. For example we don’t want two bickering relatives or work colleagues seated next to each other on the same table. Ideally attention would be paid to who is sitting on each table and who is sitting next to whom. Having a head table is not always required, but perhaps for weddings it would be a nice choice.

Flowers and table decoration
Flowers are always important to spruce up a dinner table. There is no set rule as to which flowers you should choose, but it is important that they aren’t too big so that they compliment the table and so that people can still see each other across the table. Also it is essential not to select a flower arrangement with a strong scent that could overpower the food. As for other table decorations like the table cloth, napkins, candles etc.. white is always a safe bet when choosing a colour. White is seen as clean and it goes with everything. Your dining table should look elegant but also functional, and should never get in the way of the diners experience.
